These animals were predators and their fossils are highly sought after. Of all Florida fossils carnivores are least common. This page features fossils from cats, wolves, bears, and more. Xenarthra This grouping of animals features sloths, armadillos, and glyptodonts. These are unique animals whose fossils are both highly collectible and fascinating. Reptile Florida is very well known for its reptiles, most notably the American alligator. Reptile fossils are common finds in Florida, but as with all fossils, high quality examples are uncommon. Artiodactyl Artiodactyls are animals with an even number of toes on each foot. This grouping of animals features deer, camel, bison, antelope, giraffe, and more. Florida fossils from this group range from common (white-tailed deer) to extremely rare (giraffe). Perissodactyl Perissodactyls are animals with an odd number of toes on each foot. This grouping of animals features horse, tapir, and rhinoceros. The tapir is believed to have been the last surviving Perissodactyl in Florida, having gone extinct around 9,000 years ago. Proboscidea Mastodons, mammoths, and gomphotheres all belong to the order Proboscidea. Proboscidea teeth are some of the most famous and highly collectible of all Florida fossils. Shark Shark teeth are quite possibly the most easily recognizable fossils by the general public. The Discovery Channel and Shark Week, along with souvenir stores everywhere, are to thank for this. Shark teeth can be found virtually anywhere in Florida. Large, high quality, colorful examples are always in high demand. Bird Because bird bones are hollow and fragile, complete examples are uncommon. Also, with so many species of birds and each bone being very similar, the bones are often difficult to positively identify. The most famous bird fossils are those of the extinct Titanis walleri, or "terror bird". Miscellaneous This page features fossils from rodents, amphibians, lagomorphs, invertebrates, marsupials, and more. |
