This is a very nice section of mandible (lower jaw) from the incredibly rare pygmy tapir. This specimen was found in a Bone Valley phosphate mine. This species dates from the late Miocene to early Pliocene. The teeth have stunning ultra glossy marbled enamel coloration. One tooth is fully unerupted and still encased in bone. The jaw is rock solid and heavily mineralized. Awesome representation from a very rare species.
