This is a very unusual alligator scute (osteoderm) that has been gnawed all the way around by a rodent. This specimen has an attractive glossy black patina. It does not appear to have any damage, it has just been extensively gnawed by a rodent of some type. This is the first alligator bone that we've encountered that has been gnawed this much.
